My Life Just Got Turned Upside Down... Now What?

We've all had that moment—that gut-punch feeling when life suddenly changes.

Maybe it's an unexpected medical diagnosis, a job loss, or a relationship ending. Whatever it is, everything can feel uncertain. Your body tenses, your breathing becomes shallow, and your mind races as you try to figure out what to do next.

Our first instinct is usually to react, fix the problem, or regain control as quickly as possible.

But before you do...

Pause.

Over the years, I've learned that some of the simplest mindfulness practices can make the biggest difference during life's hardest moments. Here are three that I return to again and again.

1. Pause and Breathe - Before you react, take a few slow, deep breaths.

As Jefferson Fisher says, "Let your breath be your first word." Giving yourself even a few moments to breathe helps calm your nervous system so you can respond with more clarity.

2. Name What You're FeelingAsk yourself: What am I feeling right now?

Fear? Shock? Anger? Sadness?

Instead of pushing those emotions away, acknowledge them. Give yourself permission to feel them without judgment.

3. Write or MoveTake a walk, stretch, or grab a pen and paper.

If you choose to write, don't edit yourself. Simply ask, "What do I know for sure?" and let your thoughts flow. Getting them out of your head and onto paper creates space for clarity and perspective.

One Last Thought

When life gets turned upside down, you don't have to have all the answers today.

Start with one breath. One feeling. One small step.

These simple practices won't change your circumstances overnight, but they can change how you move through them. And sometimes, that's exactly where healing begins.
